I went through about 10 different espresso machines and finally concluded that the Gaggia Classic is the best one for under $1000. I had gone through 2 KitchenAid Pro Espresso Machines and they both broke. I then exchanged it for an automatic Jura-Capresso and that got clogged. I exchanged that for a Breville espresso machine but that exploded in my kitchen. I also had a FrancisFrancis! but it could not keep up with my 2 cappuccinos a day routine. The La Pavoni Europiccola manual espresso machine looked cool but burnt the espresso everytime. We’ve had our Breville machine for over 4 years and it’s still going strong – which is saying something because we’ve been known to use it 3 – 7 times a day for multiple espressos, tea, and just steaming milk. We love this machine. It works really well, really consistently, even though we honestly don’t take very good care of it. It’s easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to fill (and wash out)the water tank (especially important if you have gnarly hard water like ours). It’s really good looking out on the counter too and doesn’t really take up much space – after all, it stores all of it’s own parts (there’s a handy tray under/behind the water reservoir that holds the other size of filter, cleaning needle for the steam wand, etc.). The steamer works great and does an excellent job even on soy milk (which is all we use). We have made our money back on this machine many times over. I would highly recommend it to anyone who drinks a lot of espresso and wants to start making it at home. It may have cost as much as my first car, but it runs a lot more dependably!
